Shaping Global Health Together
Under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health, the new “Federal Government’s Global Health Strategy“ is being developed. The intention behind it is, specifically, to update the goals of Germany’s engagement and to respond to recent challenges. Today marks the official start of the strategy drafting process.
Germany has demonstrated strong commitment to global health over recent years, taking on responsibility on the international plane. In the meantime, we have come to hold a leadership position that is highly acknowledged internationally. With our new Global Health Strategy, we aim to continue on this path we embarked on. Together with other international partners, we want to make a meaningful contribution to addressing global health challenges
German Federal Government to Prepare New Global Health Strategy
Germany’s commitment so far has been based on the 2013 global health concept with which the Federal Government first defined the country’s contribution to this domain. However, the global health landscape has changed in major ways in the years since the concept was adopted: Recent commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030, but also epidemics such as the 2014 Ebola crisis all played a part in raising the profile of public health issues.
At the kick-off event with an attendance of approx. 120 persons, representatives from various Departments, together with non-state actors, are taking stock of what Germany has achieved on global health over the last few years.
Organised into several working groups, the participants will be drafting the initial ideas for the priorities and goals that will feature in the new Strategy. The non-state actors then have time until the end of August 2018 to submit position papers setting out their priorities for inclusion in the strategy drafting process.
In this context, coordinators are being designated for the individual actors from civil society, business, academia, think tanks and youth.
The following act as the coordinators and contacts for the various groups:
- VENRO AG Gesundheit for civil society
- German Healthcare Partnership for business
- Deutsche Gesellschaft für Public Health for academia
- Institut für Globale Gesundheit Berlin e.V. for the think tanks
- Bundesvertretung der Medizinstudierenden in Deutschland (bvmd) for youth.
The adoption of the new Global Health Strategy by the Cabinet is slated for the second half of 2019.
